Social media image sizes, in one table

For most brands three shapes cover almost everything: 4:5 portrait (1080 × 1350) for feed posts, 1:1 square (1080 × 1080) for carousels, and 9:16 vertical (1080 × 1920) for Reels, Stories, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

Why 4:5 beats square in the feed

A 4:5 portrait picture takes more of the screen in a phone feed than a square one does, so it is the usual choice for single feed posts. Square stays useful for carousels, where every slide has to share one shape, and 9:16 is the only shape for full-screen video.

PlanMedia makes every piece in its format's shape from the start: posts at 4:5, carousels at 1:1, and stories, reels and shorts at 9:16, so nothing is cropped at the last minute.

Questions people ask

What is the best image size for Instagram?

1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) for feed posts, 1080 × 1080 (1:1) for square posts and carousels, and 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for Reels and Stories.

What size is a TikTok or a YouTube Short?

Vertical 9:16, 1080 × 1920 pixels.

Which image size works on every platform?

No single size does. 1:1 square is accepted almost everywhere but wastes space in vertical feeds. Make a 4:5 version for feeds and a 9:16 version for full-screen formats.
