Engagement rate calculator
Engagement rate is the share of people who interacted with a post: likes, comments, shares and saves added together, divided by followers, times 100. Dividing by reach instead tells you how the post did with the people who actually saw it.

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. Compare a post with your own past posts, not with someone else's average.
Two ways to calculate it
| Method | Formula | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100 | Comparing accounts or months |
| By reach | (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ reach × 100 | Comparing posts with each other |
Compare like with like
An engagement rate means most next to your own earlier numbers: the same format, on the same channel, over enough posts to be a pattern rather than one lucky day. A Reel against a Story, or a launch month against a quiet one, is not a fair comparison.
PlanMedia's Analyst is briefed the same way: compare results per category, format, platform and posting hour, say out loud when a sample is too small to act on, and name the metric and the change behind every finding.
Questions people ask
How do you calculate engagement rate?
Add likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by followers (or by reach), and multiply by 100.
Should I use followers or reach?
Use reach to compare posts with each other, because it counts only the people who saw the post. Use followers to compare accounts or months.
What is a good engagement rate?
The useful comparison is with your own past posts in the same format and channel. Averages from other accounts depend on their size, sector and method, so they make a poor yardstick.
